Judy was born in 1949, in Western Australia. An aptitude for drawing and painting was evident from an early age and throughout her school life she was regularly called on when design work was required. She was awarded school art prizes and other children's art awards, and her Leaving Certificate results placed her within the top four students in the state. She went on to complete a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in Anthropology, and later, a Diploma of Education at the University of Western Australia.
Whilst studying, Judy did some freelance design work and pursued some informal art studies during a trip to the UK and Europe. After graduating she spent some time teaching in high schools.
In 1978, a cyclone damaged some old leadlights taken from the family home, that were waiting to be installed in a stone house she was building on a small farming property. The need to repair them led Judy down a path that led to an interest in stained glass as an artistic medium. In 1980 she established Mountolive Stained Glass Studio on a hills property she shared with her husband and two small children.
Judy has been the recipient of several community arts grants, supervising community glass projects in Mundaring, Kalamunda and Ellenbrook. Her work may be seen in churches, schools and other public buildings. She is also represented overseas, including a stained glass window in the Catholic chapel on the island of Tristan da Cunha, in the remote South Atlantic Ocean.
More recently she has extended her art practice into jewellery and painting. |
Born in New Zealand in 1969 Sara started drawing as soon as she was able to hold a pen and encouraged by her parents did so avidly throughout her school years. Many hours were spent with her two sisters drawing on large sheets of butchers' paper. Sara has always been captivated by wildlife: plants and animals frequently featured in her artwork. After leaving school (with a Subject Exhibition for Art - top student for WA), although not pursuing an artistic career, she continued to draw and paint Australian flora and fauna as a hobby. Inspired by the wildlife surrounding her hills home, Sara began to sell her paintings in local galleries which she continues to this day.
In 1993 Sara joined Judy Kotai at Mountolive Studio Gallery. Whilst working with Judy she learned a variety of skills including leadlighting and traditional glass painting which she continued along with her watercolour painting. She continues her association with Mountolive Studio Gallery in Hovea where her work is displayed.
Her focus is the beautiful Australian birds, particularly the varieties of native wren and the brightly coloured parrots. She is also fascinated with reptiles (particularly frogs) and small lesser-known marsupials.
A range of environmentally friendly cards and bookmarks featuring Sara's artwork are also available through selected retail outlets both in WA and interstate. Sara also produces designs for Australian Fine China which sell successfully nationwide.
On a personal level Sara seeks to live in an environmentally sustainable way. She is constantly seeking ways in which she is able to minimise her family's impact on the environment. One creative passion shared by her husband and children is home-grown fruit and vegetables. |
